for the second year running

Yes newts eat both frog spawn and tadpoles, however so do many other creatures including diving beetles, dragonfly nymphs, water boatmen, birds, foxes, hedgehogs and rats.

Predation will impact the number of tadpole in you garden, but another common cause of disappearing spawn/tadpoles is cold. Tadpoles require warmth and light to develop properly, unfortunately with all the cold weather we have experienced the tadpoles may have died. This can be exacerbated if ponds are particularly shady. Alternatively the spawn may have sunk down out of sight. In some cases it will still develop normally.

Usually these are nothing to be worried about, the hedgehog may be looking for a mate, warning another hedgehog out of it’s territory or just snuffling around investigating it’s surroundings. As the hedgehog is in an artificial home, the coughing noise could indicate that the air is a bit dry in there or that the bedding is getting a bit dirty. I don’t think this is something you need to be too worried about. I expect the hedgehog is just waking up from hibernation, and will soon clean themselves up a bit.

That said hedgehogs can be affected by lungworm and pneumonia so I suggest you keep an eye on him/her and listen to see if the cough persists. Unfortunately it is not always easy to distinguish poorly coughing from healthy noises, so keep an eye out for other signs that this hedgehog may be sick. If it is ever seen outside in the daytime, starts losing weight or staggering around then it is not healthy and needs to be taken to a hedgehog carer. For more information on what to do with a poorly hedgehog please visit the British Hedgehog Preservation Society’s website.
